Croatian-born American Bernanda Pera stunned ninth-seed Johanna Konta of Great Britain on Day 4 of the Australian Open on Thursday, ousting her 6-4, 7-5 to nail down the biggest win of her career.

“It feels amazing,” said Pera. “I was ready to leave on Monday and then they told me I’m in, so I was obviously excited. I was checking the tickets to fly back. I’m happy I didn’t buy one.”

The 23-year old lucky loser replaced Russia’s Margerita Gasparyan in the main draw and has made the most of her chance. She set up 17 break points on Konta’s serve, converting on four of them while also hitting 26 winners.

Pera moves into a matchup with Barbora Strycova, who won her second-round match in straight sets.

Top-seed Simona Halep shook off an ankle injury to breeze past Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard 6-2, 6-2.

“I still feel pain. Also, I couldn’t practice much. But during the match, I just forgot about it. I had a very tight tape. I could move,” she said of the injury. “Even if I am a little bit injured, I played very well and I moved very well. I played much better than I expected. The most important thing is that I could play my game not thinking about the ankle. I did it great today. I just wanted to play the match and to win it.”

Halep will square off with American Lauren Davis next. Davis stormed back to beat Andrea Petkovic 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.

Maria Sharapova continued her hot start in Melbourne by dismissing Latvian Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 7-6(4), a player that has given her trouble in the past.

“I did my job in two sets against someone that’s been troubling in the past for me,” said Sharapova. “So third round of the Australian Open, I don’t know, I think I deserve to smile out there after that victory.”

Awaiting Sharapova in the third-round will be Angelique Kerber, the 21st seed who celebrated her 30th birthday with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Donna Vekic.

“I really enjoy being here in Australia—to have my 30th birthday here was just amazing,” said Kerber. “I’m feeling good. I’m happy with my performances, I’m happy with how I have played over the last few days and weeks.”

Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei played some of her best tennis to knock off third-seed Garbine Muguruza 7-6(1), 6-4.

“I’ve been on tour too long, so there must be a few interesting matches in my life,” said Hsieh. “Of course this is one of the biggest players I beat. So, it’s of course a great memory for me.”

She will take on 26th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who came back from a set down to beat Lesia Tsurenko 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
