Two local programs and conference rivals, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and Queens College, squared off in the NCAA Tournament Division II second round on Tuesday for a spot in the Sweet 16.

The Knights were able to exact some revenge on the Bears, as NYIT won the East Coast Conference title with a victory over Queens College in the conference final back in October.

On Tuesday, NYIT jumped out to the early lead by winning two of the three doubles flights to secure the doubles point. But the singles players delivered for Queens as the Knights took four of the five flights, including Luisa Auffarth’s clinching win, to secure the 4-2 team victory.

While Queens moves onto the Sweet 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla., it brings an end to an era at NYIT, as the tennis programs are being eliminated at the end of this academic year.
