On Wednesday, Serena Williams announced she will not be competing at the 2022 Australian Open in January.

“Following the advice of my medical team, I have decided to withdraw from this year’s Australian Open,” she said in a statement. “While this is never an easy decision to make, I am not where I need to be physically to compete. Melbourne is one of my favorite cities to visit and I look forward to playing at the Australian Open every year.”

Serena has not played a competitive match since Wimbledon, when she was forced to retire during her opening round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich after she was injured on a tough fall. Serena’s ranking has slipped down to 41st in the world.

Serena’s last major title came at the 2017 Australian Open, her 23rd major title overall.

“I will miss seeing the fans but am excited to return and compete at my highest level.”
