One of the first members of MatchPoint NYC’s QuickStart program was a five-year old named Katerina Shabashkevich, and in the years since joining the club, Shabashkevich has become a top junior player.

Now nine-years old, Shabashkevich is a USTA member and has competed in many tournaments where she has found success. She has earned 11 trophies at tournaments and won six of them, using her hard work and dedication to better her tennis game.

She comes from an athletic family, and that has played a huge part in her development.

“I was born into an athletic family and competitive spirit is in my genes. My mom was a rhythmic gymnast and my dad played ice hockey, so I am naturally interested in playing sports,” said Shabashkevich. “I am happy to be part of MatchPoint NYC because the club offers many options for children to stay active and have fun all-year round. My coaches, Pavel Bednarzh and Dmitriy Petushkov, continue to improve my tennis skills. Danny Ostrometsky focuses on my fitness. Vladimir and Valeria Curinnoi challenge me in swimming. Each of these activities helps me become a better tennis player.

My favorite thing about playing tennis is to compete.”

Shabashkevich has an outgoing personality and a competitive spirit which has expedited her progress as a tennis player. Her favorite player is Rafael Nadal, and she tries to model her game after the Spaniard.

“I like Nadal because he is consistently great on the court and a humble person off the court,” she said. “When I face a tough opponent during a match, I try and stay focused and play my game. I work hard and love to compete at tournaments because it shows my progress, and my goal is to become the best tennis player I can be.

The development of Shabashkevich going forward has the staff at MatchPoint NYC excited as she is a great representative of the club and its program.

Her advice for younger tennis players: “Get on the tennis court and enjoy the game!”
