On the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Open, Arthur Ashe Kids Day returned to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. For the second consecutive year, Arthur Ashe Kids Day supported and promoted Net Generation, the USTA’s approach to inspire the next generation of tennis players. All over the grounds of the National Tennis Center, kids were playing tennis, having fun and taking part in an array of activities.

“As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Open and Arthur Ashe’s historic win, we are reminded why we honor Arthur Ashe and his legacy on this day,” said Gordon Smith, USTA Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. “Arthur Ashe Kids Day, and the USTA’s Net Generation, help fulfill Arthur’s mission of promoting the sport of tennis to young people and continue Arthur’s vision of instilling the values of humanitarianism, leadership and academic excellence. We pay tribute to Arthur Ashe as a champion both on and off the court and a leader for civil rights, equal rights and human rights.”

Inside Arthur Ashe Stadium Court, thousands of fans were able to see their favorite tennis players and musical acts, as Skai Jackson and Alex Aiono co-hosted the televised show, along with Radio Disney’s Morgan.

The world’s largest single-day, grassroots tennis and entertainment event featured appearances from Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Angelique Kerber and Madison Keys on-court, plus live performances from Echosmith, In Real Life, Kim Petras and AJ Mitchell. The show also featured a special performance of “Shine” by students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

The tennis stars were a bit surprised by a girl from the NYJTL program who beat them all in the “Hit the Target” contest. The bands all put on great performances and engaged the eager crowd.

“Arthur Ashe has done so many great things and I’m happy to help honor that,” said musician AJ Mitchell. “We have heard about the great artists who have performed at Arthur Ashe Kids Day in the past, so we are excited to be a part of it”

Singer Brady Tutton, from the boy band In Real Life, is an avid tennis player himself.

“I do play some tennis,” noted Tutton. “It’s the one sport I really enjoy. I think today is amazing here at Arthur Ashe Kids Day! I played tennis with my friends growing up, and we were always competitive. I enjoy playing, and today’s festivities truly bring out what makes this sport so special.”
