Svitolina Beats Halep, Pushes Garcia Into Singapore Semifinals

With no chance of advancing and only the role of spoiler left to play for, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina did just that on Friday, defeating world number one Simona Halep 6-3, 6-4 to eliminate the Romanian from the WTA Finals in Singapore and thus send France’s Caroline Garcia into the final four.

Svitolina was eliminated earlier in the day when Garcia came back to beat Caroline Wozniacki, but the Ukrainian came to play against Halep. She converted on her only break chance in the opening set before breaking twice more in the second set.

Garcia will take on American Venus Williams in the semifinals, while Wozniacki will play Karolina Pliskova.

“It was kind of weird, actually, to be here,” Garcia said after her win over Wozniacki. “I qualified last minute, two weeks before. I really wanted to keep improving, play every single match and get experience. That’s why I think I won these two matches.”
