Defending champion Serena Williams has entered to play in the 2018 Australian Open next month according to tournament director Craig Tiley.

“She has got her visa, she has entered, she’s practicing, and she probably just needs a bit more space for a bigger entourage,” said Tiley. “There is no question she will be ready in our view. She wants to break the record owned by Margaret Court and it would be a significant accomplishment.”

Serena currently owns 23 Grand Slam singles titles, tied with Steffi Graf for most in the Open Era and one behind Court for most all-time. Her last match was last year’s Australian Open final where she defeated older sister Venus. In the time since, Serena gave birth to her first child and got married.

The 2018 Australian Open begins on January 15.
