Staked by singles victories from Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz, the U.S. Davis Cup team defeated Kazakhstan today in Glasgow, 2-1, to move to 2-0 in Group Stage play and put itself one step closer to qualifying for the ultimate Davis Cup Final stage in Malaga, Spain.

The Americans sit atop Group D and will qualify for Malaga in November if the Netherlands beats Great Britain on Friday in Glasgow. If Great Britain wins that tie, the U.S. will need to beat the Netherlands on Saturday to ensure its advancement. Should Great Britain beat the Netherlands and Kazakhstan and the Netherlands then beat the U.S., there would be a three-way tie atop the group, and percentage of matches, sets and games won — not head-to-head competition — would be the tiebreakers that would determine the two nations advancing.
