USTA Eastern, in partnership with multiple New York-based tennis facilities and tennis organizations, will host a collection of tennis events to celebrate Asian-American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage month and to raise money for related causes. Celebrating Asian heritage is especially important this year—a study of 15 major cities across the country showed that anti-Asian hate crimes surged by 169 percent in just the first quarter of 2021.

The USTA Eastern community includes a substantial number of Asian-Americans compared to other USTA sections across the country. 11.6 percent of Eastern players identify as Asian/Pacific Islander.

“It’s gratifying to see these tennis organizations in the USTA Eastern Section make a statement with their actions in support of the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community,” said David Williams, USTA Eastern Manager of Diversity & Inclusion. “We welcome more tennis providers to engage with us this month—and in the future—so that we may continue to make a substantive impact and increase playing opportunities for the local Asian-American and Pacific Islander population.”

Facilities and tennis organizations participating in this initiative throughout the month include:

Alley Pond Tennis Center (Queens Village, N.Y.)

Break the Love (New York, N.Y.)

Carefree Racquet Club (North Merrick, N.Y.)

Fort Greene Tennis Association (Brooklyn, N.Y.)

Sportime Lynbrook (Lynbrook, N.Y.)

USTA Eastern will work in coordination with these facilities and organizations and help support these events through marketing and promotional efforts. As a part of this collaboration, USTA Eastern is recommending facilities partner with the following organizations to fundraise on behalf of AAPI causes:

Americares

Stop AAPI Hate

►Organizations facilitating COVID relief in India, such as UNICEF, Care India, and OxygenForIndia
