For the second tournament in a row, we’ve seen world number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark fall in her opening match of the Western & Southern Open, an Olympus U.S. Open Series event in Cincinnati. This time, Wozniacki was upset by young American teenager Christina McHale, 6-4, 7-5. For Wozniacki, this loss as opposed to her early round exit in Toronto is much more embarassing. For a world number one to lose to what you would call a rookie in Christina McHale, something has to be wrong with the Wozniacki’s game. This is now the third straight first round exit for the Danish world number one which is heavily decreasing her odds at the U.S. Open beginning Aug. 29th.

Believe it or not, Wozniacki is now on a four-match losing streak which attributes to all the issues she’s been having this year. Wozniacki also hasn’t beaten any top tier names this year on a consistent basis. Her biggest win came against Maria Sharapova at the Indian Wells tournament back in march. Since then, Wozniacki has continued to struggle and is still searching for the right answer going into this year’s U.S. Open.

As for Christina Mchale, who is 19-years-old and from Englewood Cliffs, N.J., this is obviously the biggest win of her short career thus far. For McHale, this was her first win versus a player ranked in the WTA top five and she becomes the first American to beat a world number one since Venus Williams beat Russian world number one Dinara Safina in 2009. Up next for McHale will be veteran Nadia Petrova of Russia.
