New York City was well-represented on Friday as the second round of the 2012 NYSPHSAA Boys Tennis Championships began at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. All three PSAL doubles teams made it through to the second round, as well as the top two seeds in singles.

Beacon teammates Justin Fields and Christian Waldron both won their first round matches in straight sets. Hugh Mo of Benjamin Cardozo lost a heartbreaker of a match, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, to Artem Khrapko of Corning High School after battling through cramps to come back from down 4-5 in the second set.

The top-ranked PSAL doubles team of Lucas Pickering & Winn Smith from Beacon needed a third set tie-breaker to take down their first round opponents, Ian Baranowski & Kevin Katz from Syosset High School. Stuyvesant’s Christopher Jou & Leon Pan took out the top-ranked doubles team from Genesee Valley, Aaron Mevorach & Jordan Benjamin, in straight sets. Matthew Balilo & Marcus Smith from Benjamin Cardozo recorded a “double bagel” victory, not giving up a single game, against the team of Nick Stosiek & Alex Jelinek from Lake Placid Central.
