American John Isner defended his title in Atlanta on Sunday, rolling past Israeli Dudi Sela 6-3, 6-4 to capture the BB&T Atlanta Open for the second straight year. The top-seeded Isner ripped 15 aces throughout the match and used a dominant and powerful serve to outmuscle Sela.

Isner did not lose a service game all match and topped out over 140 miles per hour on some of his serves. Sela was surrendering more than a foot in height to the 6’10 Isner, who just overpowered his 5’9 opponent.

“I was able to get up early, and I was playing from ahead,” said Isner in reference to the early lead he took over Sela. “I like that situation a lot given the conditions and how I’m serving. I think it was not so much that he was feeling the heat, but the conditions were different. My serve is tougher during the day than it is at night.”

While his serve was nearly untouchable, Isner’s return game was also consistent in defending Sela’s serve. The American won 61 percent of Sela’s second serves which allowed him some key break points to take control of the match.

“It changed my strategy,” said Sela referring to the break point in his first service game. “It changed [Isner’s] strategy as well. He went for his shots and played more freely. It changed a lot.”

The title is the ninth of Isner’s career and improves his record in Atlanta to 16-3. Down 15-30 while serving on match point, the 12th-ranked American fired three straight aces in a symbolic fashion to wrap up the victory.

The University of Georgia product put on another good show in front of his home fans in a place he feels comfortable playing in.

“The field is so tough at this event. I’m so happy to win this,” said Isner. “I consider myself fortunate that this event is even here. It’s a big advantage for me to play in Georgia and have a lot of support.”

American Jack Sock, who lost to Isner in the singles semifinals on Saturday, teamed up with Canadian Vasek Pospisil to capture the doubles title in Atlanta. The two, who won the Wimbledon doubles title three weeks ago in their first event together, won a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 10-5 over Americans Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey in the title match.

The BB&T Atlanta Open is the opening event of the Emirates Airline U.S. Open Series which leads into the U.S. Open itself. The Citi Open next up and starts this week in Washington D.C. with Tomas Berdych and Milos Raonic as the top two seeds.
