Wimbledon's 2014 Junior Champion Noah Rubin, a freshman on the Wake Forest men’s tennis team and native of Rockville Centre, N.Y., will make his ATP World Tour debut at the Winston-Salem Open after he accepted a wild card into the main draw of the tournament, which starts this Saturday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex at BB&T Field.
Rubin, who also won the USTA Boys National Championship in singles and doubles last week, earning wild cards into the U.S. Open for both events, will play his first ATP Tour-level match on the same courts where he will compete for the Demon Deacons starting this fall.
“Noah has shown this summer that he has the potential to be a star in American tennis, and we’re excited to watch him play his first Tour-level match at the Winston-Salem Open,” said Tournament Director Bill Oakes. “This is a great opportunity for fans to get a peek at a player who has a very bright future ahead of him."
The Winston-Salem Open begins with qualifying on Saturday, with main draw play starting on Sunday, Aug. 17 and culminating in the finals on Saturday, Aug. 23.
Rubin, 18, stormed through the draw at the All-England Club in July, beating his doubles partner Stefan Kozlov in the final to become the first American to win the Wimbledon boys singles title since Donald Young in 2007 and only the third to do so in the last 30 years.
The number one college recruit in his class, Rubin is currently ranked 585th in the ATP Rankings–one of the highest rankings among players choosing to play college tennis. He is the first junior Grand Slam champion to play college tennis since 2005.
Rubin continued his summer tear last week at the USTA Boys 18 & Under National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., dropping only two sets in seven matches including a straight-set win over defending champion Collin Altamirano in the final. He also captured the doubles title with Stefan Kozlov. By virtue of his wins, he will compete in the main draw of the U.S. Open in both the singles and doubles draws.
Two more Winston-Salem Open wild cards remain to be handed out before the draw is made on Friday evening.
