Sunday afternoon at the U.S. Open, 52 unforced errors from David Ferrer, seeded fourth, was just too much to overcome, opening the door for the 26th-seeded Gilles Simon’s 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 upset

"David is always fighting until the end," said Simon. "We were 5-1, he destroyed me five times. I just stayed relax today and had nothing to lose. I had a good start and then you know how it is."

Ferrer is the first of the top 10 seeds eliminated from play at the Open, while Simon is through to the Round of 16 for the second time at Flushing Meadows, having also accomplished the feat in 2011 where he lost to John Isner. The Sunday afternoon loss marked Ferrer’s earliest U.S. Open exit since 2009.

Simon is seeking his first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance since the 2009 Australian Open, and will next face either Marin Cilic or Kevin Anderson.
