The semifinals of the WTA Finals are all set after the round-robin’s final two matches took place Friday, leaving the field with just four players left. Caroline Woznacki disposed of Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-3, which improved her record in Singapore to 3-0 and earned her a spot in the semis. Kvitova’s loss meant that she was eliminated from contention and Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska moved into the final four.

“I believe in myself and I believe in my skills,” said Wozniacki. “I’ve been playing well, so I believed I could beat anyone.”

Wozniacki’s opponent in the semifinals was still up in the air after her match as she would have to wait for the result of Simona Halep and Ana Ivanovic. If the Serb Ivanovic were to beat Halep, who had already qualified for the semis, in straight sets that would mean she advanced and Serena Williams would be eliminated.

After capturing the opening set in a tiebreaker, Ivanovic was one set away from advancing. Unfortunately for the Serb, Halep responded in the second set and a key break point while at 4-3 allowed her to serve out the set. Ivanovic would go on to win the third set and the match but it was just for pride as the three-setter punched a ticket for Serena in the semis where she will take on good friend Wozniacki.

“My matchup against her so far hasn’t been great. I won once and lost like 10 times, or nine, I don’t know. I don’t even count anymore,” said Wozniacki of her head-to-head matchup with Serena. “But it’s a new tournament. It’s a new week. I’ve been playing well really. Again, I believe that if I play like I did today, doesn’t matter who’s on the other side. I can win.”

The other semifinal will feature Radwanska against Halep. The Romanian lost her only match of the round-robin to Ivanovic on Friday and had already qualified for the final four on Thursday.

Radwanska lost a dramatic three-set bout with Sharapova in a match that proved to be just for pride as well. Sharapova blew a second set that saw her lead 5-1 at one point, but she stormed back in the final frames to win the match 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-2.

“I know I’m not moving forward,” said Sharapova. “But I’m proud of that effort, and to finish the year in this way.”

By virtue of Sharapova’s elimination, Serena is assured of clinching the year-end number one world ranking.

The semifinals from Singapore will be played Saturday.
