Top-seeded Belgian David Goffin was beaten at the SkiStar Swedish Open on Thursday, falling to France’s Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-3 in the second-round matchup.

From the onset, Paire came out aggressive. He broke five times in seven opportunities overall and never gave Goffin an opportunity to work himself back into the match.

“I am happy to have won this match,” said Paire. “[Denis] Istomin is a good player, but I am confident with match wins.”

Paire was referring to his next opponent, Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, who downed Spain’s Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Two-time champion Tommy Robredo cruised into the final eight on Thursday, moving past fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 6-4.

Robredo will play French qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu next.

“It was tough,” said Robredo of his match. “I was lucky in the second set, but I am happy. When we were young, Paul-Henri and I seemingly met in every junior final and as pros we have played once or twice. It will be a good battle.”

Third-seed Pablo Cuevas reached the quarterfinals on Thursday as well. After losing the second-set in a tiebreaker, the Uruguayan cruised in the deciding set for a 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-0 win over Argentinean Federico Delbonis.

Cuevas will take on Germany’s Steve Darcis who beat eighth-seeded Pole Jerzy Janowicz 6-1, 6-4.

The other quarterfinal in Bastad, Sweden will see sixth-seeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci play German teenager Alexander Zverev.
