World number one and top-seeded Novak Djokovic began his U.S. Open campaign Monday with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 win over Joao Souza of Brazil in just over 70 minutes. Djokovic is 20-1 at majors in 2015, losing only to Stan Wawrinka in the finals of the French Open.

“There’s something that I love about number one for sure,” said Djokovic post-match, having spent 162 weeks in the top spot atop the ATP Men’s Singles Rankings. He leads the ATP World Tour with six titles and a 56-5 match record this season

“With a dominant win like the one today, it adds to your confidence, your self-belief,” said Djokovic. “But it's also making a statement for everybody that is out there watching. We are all watching each other's matches. We are all seeing how each other progresses. It's important you're out on the court with the right intensity and you're sending a good message, and I've done so.”

Up next for Djokovic is Andreas Haider-Maurer, who defeated Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(0), 6-0, 6-1 on Monday.
