Petra Kvitova Named Czech Athlete of the Year

Petra Kvitova has been chosen as the Czech Athlete of the Year in a poll conducted by sports journalists. The 21-year-old Wimbledon champion has been honored as the WTA’s player of the year for 2011 and won six singles title. She has risen 32 positions from 34th in the rankings to second in the past year.

The other two in the running for top athlete were Jaroslav Kulhavy, who won a cross-country race at the Mountain Bike World Championships, and Martina Sablikova who was a world speed skating champion. The Czech Fed Cup team that won the competition this year also included Kvitova and was named as the Team of the Year.
