World number one-ranked Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Dubai Championships due to a lower back injury. Yesterday, world number two-ranked Victoria Azarenka pulled out of the same event citing a bone bruise in her foot. Serena took over the world number one ranking last week in Qatar, the sixth time in her career she has been the top-ranked player in the world. She lost in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open last month to fellow American Sloane Stephens after injuring her back.

Serena lost last week to Azarenka in the finals of the Quatar Open.
