While the tennis season is in a hiatus as we prepare for the 2015 season, two of the world’s best players entertained 11,000 fans at Hallenstadion in Zurich, Switzerland on Sunday. Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka played an exhibition match in front of the sold out crowd in The Match For Africa 2 presented by Rolex, with Federer coming out victorious 7-6(4), 6-4 over his compatriot.
“The evening was a great experience for me,” said Federer. “Stan and I were given a wonderful reception in the stadium. The fact that we were able to raise such a large amount for the foundation makes the evening even more special. A hearty thank you to Stan that he made this possible.”
The event was part of the Roger Federer Foundation, which promotes access to quality education and projects operated by local nonprofit groups primarily in six southern African nations as well as Switzerland,.
The match yesterday raised approximately 1.3 million Swiss Francs. Traditional African dance and song were played throughout the changeovers to the delight of the capacity crowd.
Federer notched the match’s only break point in the third game of the second set after capturing the opening frame in a tiebreaker. After breaking to go up 2-1, Federer went on to serve out the 93-minute match and closed it out with an overhead smash.
