Spaniard Garbine Muguruza is through to her first Grand Slam final after beating 13th-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the Wimbledon finals on Thursday.
“I don’t have words to express how happy I am,” said the 20th-seeded Muguruza. “I worked all my life to achieve this moment so there are no words. I was just thinking that the match was going to be tough and I was very nervous in the second set. Radwanska has a lot of experience and I just fought. It’s going to be a dream—I’m in the final of Wimbledon—but I really want to win this tournament so I must concentrate for the next one.”
Muguruza came out firing and used her power to eliminate some of Radwanska’s excellent ground-strokes. She broke twice early on to build a 4-1 advantage, and served out the remainder of the opening set 6-2.
Radwanska would fight back, though, and fought off an early break in the second set with a break point of her own in the sixth game. She would break once more and after a hold, forced the match into a deciding third set.
In the third, Muguruza would break twice, including in the final game, as a Radwanska serve would sail wide on match point, giving the Spaniard the win and a spot in her first ever Grand Slam final.
