There will be a new men’s singles French Open champion as two-time defending winner Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from this year’s event as he nurses a wrist injury.

Alcaraz, a seven-time major champion, took to social media on Friday to announce he will not play the Rome Masters and the French Open, ending his clay-court season.

“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros, while we wait to assess the evolution to decide when we will return to the court,” Alcaraz wrote on social media. “It’s a complicated moment for me, but I’m sure we’ll come out stronger from here.”

Alcaraz came back from two-sets-to-down to defeat Jannik Sinner in last year’s final, and was seeking to become the third man in the Open Era to win three straight French Open finals, joining Bjorn Borg and compatriot Rafael Nadal.
