Phil Matthews Captures International Tennis Hall of Fame One-On-One Doubles Club Championship

The first ever One-On-One Doubles Tennis Tournament Event held on grasscourts took place on Friday, July 17, at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.
The center’s esteemed Tennis Director, Bill Mountford, brought One-On-One Doubles founder Ed Krass in to run the event.
The Club tournament consisted of 17 members competing with 8 of the Center’s teaching professionals to make for a 25 player round robin draw. All matches were first to win 15 points. Lead Tennis pro at the ITHOF, who starred at St. Bonaventure University, Phil Matthews, nipped Lead professional of the ITHOF, Juanra Lastra, 15-13 in the Final.
This event was a mid-summer celebration for the tennis center’s members, as 150 members were treated to a dinner party and concert after watching the exciting serve-and-volley tennis on their grasscourts.
Mountford said:
“Ed Krass put on a special show” with both running the tournament and performing the game’s theme song, later in the evening, with the house band and special guest harmonica player, James Montgomery, who is in the New England Blues Hall of Fame.”
Krass said:
“Thanks to Bill Mountford , the ITHOF event team, members and professionals for having me as a special guest at their fabulous International Hall of Fame grasscourts. It sure was a great time seeing everyone enjoying themselves! The club dinner party was a fantastic barbeque buffet and the concert was performed by a first class, veteran area rock band!”
