The 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev kicked off his run in New York this year with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 win over Hungary’s Attila Balazs on Tuesday.
Medvedev was clinical in his one hour 16 minute victory, never facing a break point throughout and hitting 41 winners to 13 unforced errors.
“It is always good to start well,” said Medvedev. “I am happy with my performance. I am looking forward to the next matches and to play for as long as possible in New York. I hope I can play better and better each match as each one is going to be difficult.”
Up next for Medvedev is Australia’s Chris O’Connell, who defeated his countryman Max Purcell 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5).
Another tournament title favorite, sixth-seed Jannik Sinner, looked good in his opening match on Tuesday as he posted a 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 victory against Yannik Hanfmann. Sinner saved all three break points he faced and converted on eight of his 15 break chances to move through in straight sets. He will take on fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego next.
Andy Murray won for the 200th time at a major as he beat France’s Corentin Moutet 6-2, 7-5, 6-3.
“It was amazing. A brilliant atmosphere against one of the most skillful players on Tour,” said Murray. “He has so many ways to disrupt you, he is an exceptional player and he moves extremely well and always causes a bit of chaos. I hope it was entertaining for everyone. There were some fun points in there. I am happy to get through in straight sets because the second set was very tight.”
Murray faces a tough test in Grigor Dimitrov, who saved three match points in a thrilling 6-7(9), 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-5, 7-6(9) comeback victory over Slovakia’s Alex Molcan.
Competing in the final tournament of his career, American John Isner extended his time competing as he notched a 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(1) triumph against Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta.
“It’s a little bit emotional. I think, in a sense, its helping me free up a little bit,” Isner said when asked about possibly playing his final match. “If I didn’t win that match, it would be tough. I’m very resolute in my decision to retire. There’s no doubts about that. I’ve just got to try to empty the bucket here. One of the reasons I’m retiring is because my body is really sort of feeling it. I know why right now, too. It’s not like it was five, six, 10, 12 years ago. But still alive. Got a lot of adrenaline keeping me going. We’ll see what I can do.”
Isner will face fellow American Michael Mmoh next after Mmoh dispatched of 11th seed Karen Khachanov 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
Other winners on the men’s side on Tuesday included defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who led 6-2, 3-2 before his opponent Dominick Koepfer retired with an injury, as well as eighth-seed Andrey Rublev, 13th seed Alex de Minaur, 16th seed Cameron Norrie and 26th seed Daniel Evans. Unseeded veterans Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils each won their respective matches on Tuesday as well.
