Making his first appearance at the Australian Open in two years, second-seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz made a winning return to the tennis calendar’s first major. Alcaraz defeated veteran Frenchman Richard Gasquet 7-6(5), 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the second-round.

“It’s always great to play here in Australia,” Alcaraz told the crowd in his post-match interview. “This is the third time that I’m playing here. I didn’t have a good run the years that I played here, but I enjoyed it a lot and I missed it last year. Today, I felt really good playing here, and I enjoyed [playing] in front of the crowd.”

Competing in his first event of the new year, Alcaraz was pushed by Gasquet in the opening set, who had a chance in the tiebreaker as he lead 5-4. But Alcaraz dug in and won the next three points to claim the first set, and from there, he never looked back.

Alcaraz’s aggressiveness was a key factor, showing off his smooth net game during key points on the return, and was able to break Gasquet twice in both the second and third sets. In all, Alcaraz finished the match with 53 winners and advanced in two hours and 22 minutes.

“I tried to get better. I think in the first set, I struggled a little bit with his game and Richard was playing great as well,” Alcaraz added. “Every set, I played better and better, and in the end I think I played quite a good level.”

Up next for Alcaraz is Italian Lorenzo Sonego, who defeated Daniel Evans 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-2, 7-6(4) in his opening round matchup.

Over on the women’s side, top-seed Iga Swiatek began her push for her first Australian Open title as she took on former champion Sofia Kenin of the United States. Swiatek, like Alcaraz, was pushed in the opening set of her match, but overcame that to advance in straight sets as the four-time major champion won 7-6(2), 6-2 to secure her spot in the next round.

“I’m really happy,” said Swiatek. “It wasn’t easy at the beginning to find my rhythm, and I felt a little bit off. Huge respect to her, she won this tournament so she knows what to do. I’m happy that I managed to get my level up in the second set.”

After escaping the first set in a tiebreaker, Swiatek had to save three different break point chances in the second set to prevent Kenin from working her way back into the match. She hit 30 winners overall to set up a second-round matchup with another American in Danielle Collins. The former Australian Open finalist outlasted Angelique Kerber 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in her first-round match.

“Danielle is a really good player, we’ve played really tight matches,” said Swiatek. “Every match is different, I’m not going to anticipate anything. I’m just going to be ready and we’ll see.”
