Aragone, Young Move Within One Win of U.S. Open Main Draw

JC Aragone played in his first Grand Slam main draw last year when he won three matches in the qualifying tournament to earn a spot in the U.S. Open. On Thursday, the former University of Virginia standout moved within one victory of a trip back to the main draw, upsetting seventh-seed Italian Thomas Fabbiano 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of qualifying.

On Tuesday, Aragone needed two hours and 22 minutes to beat Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands, narrowly advancing with a 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6(5) victory. But the 23-year-old made quicker work of his opponent on Thursday.

He secured a late break in the first set thanks to back-to-back double faults from Fabbiano, and then played a dominant second set to move through in just over an hour.

Aragone moves on to play 30th seeded South African Lloyd Harris, who won 6-2, 6-1 over Sebastian Ofner, for a berth in the main draw.

Donald Young shook off a bagel in the first set to upend 29th-seeded Italian Simone Bolelli 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 to book his spot in the final round of qualifying. Young is looking to reach the 14th straight U.S. Open main draw of his career, a streak that dates back to his debut in Flushing Meadows in 2005.

Young moves on to play 12th seeded Canadian Peter Polansky, a 7-6(7), 6-4 winner over Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo.
