Barbon & Newman Capture Bradenton One-On-One Doubles Prize Money Championships

Federico Barbon, former Southeastern University star, beat Pedro Garcia, a top varsity player for Ave Maria University, 6-0, in an awesome display of serve-and-volley skills and net play to capture the Open Division at the Bradenton One-On-One Doubles Championship at the Hobson Performance Academy.
The Open Division comprised of area college players, top ranked juniors and local pros
“Barbon was probably NAIA’s premiere doubles player back in 2023,” stated Tournament Director Ed Krass. “And he put on one heckuva show, executing the midcourt volleys with perfection today.”
In the 7 & Under UTR Division, Bryce Newman, who trains at the Hobson Performance Academy, nipped Ave Maria’s top varsity player, Clara Penido, 6-5(7-3) in a thriller.
The event’s 26 players and fans were treated to a compact four hour event filled with exciting serve & volley tennis, rockin tunes, tournament t-shirt, pizza, drinks and snacks.
“I want to thank host Coach & Academy Director, Ashley Hobson, for hosting and sponsoring our One-On-One Doubles Tournament. This was my seventh event with Ashley hosting and there is good momentum for our event these days!” Krass added.

“For players considering moving to other racquet sports, One-on-One Doubles is a refreshing reminder of how dynamic and adaptable tennis can be. It keeps players active, engaged, and improving — all within the traditional tennis court,” said Hobson. “The feedback from the weekend was overwhelmingly positive. The energy on court was high, the competition was spirited, and most importantly — everyone had fun. If you haven’t tried One-on-One Doubles yet, we strongly encourage you to give it a shot. It may just become your new favorite way to play.”

Learn More About One-On-One Doubles
By Ashley Hobson
Often called the “third game of tennis” (alongside singles and traditional doubles), One-on-One Doubles is a fast-paced, competitive, and incredibly fun way to play. The concept is simple:
- Two players compete cross-court only
- The court is divided down the middle
- You play points just as you would in doubles — but one-on-one
At the higher levels, players serve and volley on both first and second serves, making it an aggressive attacking game that sharpens net skills and quick decision-making. At lower levels, the format can be adjusted:
- Serve-and-volley on first serve only
- Stay back on second serve
- Come to net when comfortable
To encourage aggressive play, a volley winner counts as two points — rewarding players who move forward and finish points at the net.
Why Players Loved It
A Fantastic Workout
One-on-One Doubles provides an outstanding physical and mental challenge. The points are quick, competitive, and engaging — without the full-court grind of singles.
Improves Your Doubles Game
This format is one of the best ways to develop:
- Net instincts
- Reflex volleys
- Court positioning
- Anticipation
- Serve-and-volley confidence
Great for All Skill Levels
One-on-One Doubles is remarkably inclusive:
- Advanced players get a high-intensity tactical battle.
- Players who struggle with movement don’t have to cover a full singles court.
- Beginners can compete and rally in a smaller, more manageable space.
Even players with very low skill levels can successfully enjoy the game.
