Italy’s Lucas Nardi scored the biggest win of his career on Monday as the 20-year-old upset top-ranked Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.

Nardi, a lucky loser, became the lowest-ranked player (No. 123) to defeat Djokovic at the ATP Masters 1000 or Grand Slam level.

“I think that before this night no one knew me,” said Nardi. “I hope that the crowd enjoyed the game. I’m super happy with this one.”

The win is just the fifth tour-level victory of Nardi’s career. After the two traded sets, Nardi pounced on Djokovic’s serve in the decider, setting up multiple break point chances in Djokovic’s opening service game, and finally breaking through at 2-3 to secure the decisive break and a 4-2 advantage.

“I don’t know,” he said of holding his nerve and serving out the win. “I think it is a miracle, because I’m a 20-year-old guy, 100 in the world, and beating Novak. It’s crazy.”

Nardi will now take on American Tommy Paul on Wednesday. Paul defeated Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-4 in his match on Monday.
