Competing in a major for the first time as a major champion, American Coco Gauff cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Russia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova to begin her Australian Open campaign.

“I was a little nervous in the first set,” Gauff, who struggled on serve in the match, admitted afterwards. “I think I did well returning, and then I found my serve towards the end of the second set. This is my third time playing her and she’s a tough player to play, but I’m happy with how I was able to manage my emotions today.”

As the reigning U.S. Open champion, Gauff is out to win a second straight major this fortnight in Melbourne. Throughout the match, however, she was unable to find rhythm on serve, only getting 55 percent of her first serves in. But from the baseline, she was fantastic, firing 15 winners and taking advantage of 27 unforced errors from her opponent.

In all, the fourth-seeded Gauff won the final eight games of the match to secure her spot in the second round.

“I think I’m always nervous in the first rounds of Slams!” Gauff added. “Honestly, it gave me more confidence today. My first round at the U.S. Open was a tough one, so I knew I could get through those tough moments. I think that’s when I was able to buckle down and take off from there.”

Gauff will take on fellow American Caroline Dolehide next. Dolehide advanced thanks to a 6-2, 6-4 win over French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean.

Other winners in the opening round of the Australian Open on the women’s side included sixth-seed Ons Jabeur, 16th seed Caroline Garcia and 19th seed Elina Svitolina. There were several early upsets as seventh-seed Marketa Vondrousova, 15th seed Veronika Kudermetova, 17th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, 21st seed Donna Vekic, and 23rd seed Anastasia Potapova were all bounced.
