Sabine Lisicki of Germany recorded the fastest serve in women’s tour history on Tuesday, according to the WTA. In her first-round match against Ana Ivanovic in the Bank of West Classic from Stanford, C.A., Lisicki ripped a 131 miles per hour (211 kilometers per hour) while serving for the lead at 5-5 in the opening set.
The speed was confirmed by IDS, a company that tracks serves for select WTA events.
Ivanovic was actually able to get her racket on it but only sailed a forehand wide as Lisicki took the 6-5 lead. The 24-year old German is known around the tour for having one of the fastest serves around and surpassed the previous record of 129 miles per hour by Venus Williams at the 2007 U.S. Open.
The top-seeded Ivanovic would go on to win the set and the match to move into the second round in Stanford, but Lisicki seemed happy enough to walk away from the court with a new record.
She said in a tweet after the match: “Well … at least I broke the world record for fastest serve on WTA.”
