Metro Volunteers Promote Tennis at NYC Arthritis Walk

A team of volunteers from USTA Eastern’s Metro Region didn’t just walk the walk on June 23. They talked the talk, as they worked to promote tennis to more than 1,400 people at the at the New York City Arthritis Walk in Battery Park.
The volunteers handed out USTA Eastern pedometers, sunscreens and pens, and spoke to participants about the health benefits of tennis for players of all ages and abilities. The annual event, which is organized by the Arthritis Foundation, is used to raise community awareness and funds needed to fight arthritis – the nation’s leading cause of disability.
“Exercising regularly is key to staying healthy when you have arthritis,” said Metro volunteer Daisy Schwartz. “And tennis is the perfect way to get that exercise. You can play singles or doubles on hard courts, clay, or grass, and compete with players of all ages and abilities.”
In addition to Schwartz, the Metro volunteers who participated in the event were: Florence Bleich-Levin, Natalyia Bodnar, Jackie Clarke, Don Fergerson, Charlotte Ganberg, Lydia Gonzalez, Anita Pornpitaksuk and Marilyn Shimon.
The Arthritis Foundation is still accepting donations for the Walk until July 26. To donate, click here.
