Roddick Defeated in Second Round of Wimbledon Tune-Up

Four-time AEGON Championships champion Andy Roddick was defeated in the second round of the Wimbledon warm-up event on Wednesday by France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, ranked 67th in the world. After various injuries, Roddick has fallen out of the top 30 in the ATP Tour rankings. Roddick has now lost 11 out of 18 matches he has played to date in 2012, which raises doubts about his ability to remain strong at Wimbledon. The last time he won was in March at the Sony Open Tennis in Miami. Roddick has reached the finals of Wimbledon three times in his career.
After more than 10 years on the ATP Tour, Roddick’s body is showing signs of wear and tear. This year he has faced ankle and hamstring injuries, most recently with an early first round exit from the French Open against Nicolas Mahut.
“The guy played great," said Roddick of Roger-Vasselin. "I didn’t hit the ball too badly. I’ve certainly played a lot worse this year so far. I thought I had a look there in the third set, and honestly I felt like I was going to take that thing once I turned it. Didn’t work out that way."
Roddick had previously hinted that this year’s Wimbledon could be his last.
"I’m just trying to play in the moment. I’m just here trying to win some matches," said Roddick. "But do I think this could be my last Wimbledon? Possibly, but that’s so much of an unknown."
