Townsend Harris Shuts Out Francis Lewis To Begin Season
Townsend Harris won its season opening match on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping all give flights to notch a 5-0 win over its Queens foe Francis Lewis.
The Hawks were led by Maxim Prohorov, who began his senior campaign with a 10-5 win over Jeremy Breland in the first singles spot. Aleksa Pljakic edged Waley Chen 10-8 in second singles while Justin Chen defeated Ervin Wong 10-4 in the third singles match.
"It was encouraging that our players struggled through a bit of adversity but still pulled out a sweep in our first match," said Townsend Harris head coach Jeff Menaker. "We hadn't been on the courts in two weeks due to the melting snow. I think everybody had had enough of conditioning drills indoors. A couple of our singles guys found themselves down a break or struggling early. They know to always change a losing game, so they made the strategic adjustments needed to win. I thought Justin Chen in particular made a nice early adjustment at third singles and really controlled his from that that point."
Nine-time defending champions Beacon opened up its season with a 5-0 triumph over Eleanor Roosevelt.
