Stan Wawrinka knocked out sixth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the first round of Wimbledon on Monday, notching the biggest win of his comeback attempt with a 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(3), 6-4 victory.

“I still think at that moment that I wasn’t playing that bad. I was missing a few things. The set went quick,” Wawrinka said of his mindset after the first set. “I’ve been practicing so hard the last few weeks on grass to get my level there, to be ready for a big match, to know that I can count on my game. I had to put myself together again, to try to fight, try to find the solution.”

He found the solution by outplaying Dimitrov in the two tiebreakers which turned the match on its head.

Wawrinka will play Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano next.

Defending champion and world number one Roger Federer disposed of Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday, never facing a break point in the one hour and 19 minute contest.

“I felt good from the start which was nice,” said Federer. “I felt right at home again which was a really nice feeling and always got the early break in each set and was able to bring it home. I’m very happy with focus, my point-for-point mentality—I think it worked very well today so I can be very happy.”

Federer books a spot against Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko.

No. 3 seed Marin Cilic, No. 9 seed John Isner, No. 11 seed Sam Querrey, No. 13 seed Milos Raonic, along with Americans Ryan Harrison, Jared Donaldson and Mackenzie MacDonald were other notable winners on Monday.
