Tip of the Week: Wimbledon Is THE Tournament

I just attended Wimbledon for the first time as a spectator last week. My visit reminded me that it is the most prestigious and important tournament in the world and that there is no way this will change. The history is unmatched by any of the other grand slams. The All England Club has made a lot of improvements and changes since my last visit there over 30 years ago.

However, at Wimbledon, things change, yet they are still the same. The grass is thicker, slower, and the surface is harder, but the courts are slick and faster than any outdoor surface. Serving and returning serve remains the focus of the successful Wimbledon participants, but there is some defense to be played. The points are short but there is the occasional long, difficult, grinding point that can make a difference in the match.

My favorite two players this year were Chris Eubanks and Elina Svitolina. Both are aggressive at the baseline and neither was expected to be where they are.

Tennis began on grass courts and the matches you see at Wimbledon are the way tennis was meant to be. Focus on serving and returning serve, use slice, speed, depth, and angles, and move forward if the opponent is in trouble. Also, visit the All-England Club during Wimbledon…it is the trip of a lifetime no matter how many times you do it.
