Tip of the Week: Every Player Is Different

tennis player

There is no cookie cutter recipe to create the perfect player. Each player’s strokes are different, their style is different, their mentality is different, and even their movement is different. It is important for a coach to let the player develop along the lines of their own individual characteristics.

If a coach can give a player the basic technique ideas and let that player incorporate some of their own unique ideas and methods into their game, it is likely to result in a more complete development of that player. There are many things that the best players have in common-early preparation, point of contact, ability to focus on the ball meeting the racquet, and recovery are just some of them.

Even those I have mentioned can be done in slightly different ways. However, the great players often have certain unique things that they do which may not be textbook, but add to the effectiveness of their shots and overall game.

As a coach, try to let the player use some of their natural qualities to enhance their game and adjust their fundamentals without taking away their innate abilities.
