Tip of the Week: Dictate the Points

Novak Djokovic just won his third French Open and 23rd Grand Slam tournament. His accomplishments are just incredible.

What is even more amazing is how his game has evolved. He has shifted from more of a defensive player and counter puncher, to a player who can control the majority of the points, hurt his opponent with his serve, his return of serve, his forehand and his backhand. He is also still great at defending and can come into the net to finish the point.

We cannot expect to do all of these things as well. However, it is possible to become the player who dictates more of the points than your opponent. Everything starts with the serve and the return. Practice serving to targets and mixing in a serve to the body every once in a while. The speed of the serve helps but where the serve lands is more important.

Make sure you feel confident serving down the “T”, out wide, and right in the middle of the service box. Use all of these serves and mix it up to keep your opponent off balance. When returning serve, try hitting it deep and down the middle of the court, especially on the first serve. It is fine to hit the second serve return more towards the sidelines to get the opponent moving, but an aggressive deep return down the middle, followed by the next shot getting the opponent on the run, is also extremely effective (Djokovic’ specialty).

Use some of these ideas to dictate the way the point is played and focus on getting your opponent to move more than you are. Djokovic has set the gold standard when it comes to dictating the point so try to follow his strategy.
