Tip of the Week: Understand These Three Mistakes

In tennis you can miss a shot in the net, wide, or long. This is assuming you make some contact with the ball and don’t just tip it or miss it completely (which I have seen happen several times at this year’s U.S. Open).

Missing the ball in the net is the least preferable of these, and also it is usually the most common. The bottom line is if the ball goes in the net you cannot win the point. Staying low and watching the ball all the way through the point of contact will help reduce this problem. Missing a ball wide is not quite as bad as hitting it into the net, but this mistake can really hurt you when considering that if you hit exactly the same shot, more towards the middle of the court, you still have a good chance to win the point.

Finally, hitting the ball long is definitely the most desirable of these errors. If most of your shots are hit deep and in the court, Your opponent will feel rushed and pushed back, which can open up a lot of court in front of them. Even when missing the shot deep, it sends a message and tends to keep them on their back foot and less offensive. Hitting the ball more crosscourt and slightly earlier can reduce your deep errors.

Everyone who plays tennis is going to make some mistakes, but understanding the differences and making some corrections can help you win the match. Pay attention to what is happening most often when you miss. Try to reduce the most common mistakes and if possible, make adjustments so that they are less likely to happen.
