Tip of the Week: Use Your Head Against Great Hitters

There are a lot of tennis players who are able to hit the ball extremely well. This is especially the case with groundstrokes.

Most practice time tends to be spent rallying and hitting from behind the baseline so many players are comfortable bashing balls back and forth. If most points are being played from the baseline position, the player who hits the ball better is likely to win more of the points. However, if you recognize that your opponent is hitting better shots than you are, my recommendation is to use your head to make it more difficult for them to execute those shots.

Try some different shots on your end. Add slice, topspin, even some sidespin, to your shots. If you have been hitting the ball relatively hard, try slowing it down and looping some balls. Change your deep shots to some shorter and lower balls. Get more of your shots to the opponent’s weaker side. Use your serve and return of serve to get the other player moving. If they are running down a lot of your shots, hit more balls behind them or use the middle of the court.

Try hitting more shots early, from inside the baseline or pull your opponent into the net with shorter balls or drop shots. These are just some of the things you can do by using your mind rather than trying to outhit your opponent. Choose something and see how it goes for for five or ten minutes. If your idea works, keep using it.

If not, try something else.

Using your head in a match is not a very common idea, but it can definitely be the difference against the great ball strikers. Outthink and outsmart your opponent to frustrate them and give yourself a great opportunity to win the match.
